Sanding and Refinishing (Recoating & Resealing)

If you’re trying to find experts who can assist you with hardwood floor installation, sanding, coloring, staining and refinishing work, we can help  you out. Looking to seal or re-coat your floors? Concerned about the fumes and odors? We have Eco-Friendly, low-odor, low-VOC, and water-based finish options! No toxic or smelly products.

Screen and re-coat are often called “buff and re-coat." This process freshens your floors and removes some of the dullness and minor scratches. Don’t expect a buff and re-coat to take out deep scratches, gauges, or discoloration. Screening is quick, and you can typically return home in the evening without a problem. Your Renovation Hardwood Floors specialist will use a buffing machine to abrade your floors' old finish. He will then vacuum the area and apply a fresh coat of finish giving your floors their old shine back. Keep in mind: certain oily cleaners used to clean your floors may affect the way the new finish bonds to the old

Our refinishing services involve sanding down existing flooring and putting a finishing coat on top to restore the flooring to a “like new” state. If you’re trying to find experts who can assist you with hardwood floor installation, sanding, coloring, staining, and refinishing work, we can  help you out.

Staining

Here at Renovation Hardwood floors we stain your floor with any type of stain to your liking and the best quality.

Keep in mind that floors with stains already applied to them can be difficult, if not impossible, to touch up and repair. The best option is to sand, stain, and refinish all the room.

Keep in mind that floors with stains already applied to them can be difficult, if not impossible, to touch up and repair.

Be aware that when replacing boards and only applying finish to those particular boards, there will be a noticeable difference between the new boards and the existing ones. Time will eventually blend the two together, but the best option would be to have the entire room refinished so that the seams and finishes are flawless.

Refinishing

Our refinishing services involve sanding down existing flooring and putting a finishing coat on top to restore the flooring to a “like new” state.

Why Hardwood Floors are Better

When contemplating new flooring options, the myriad choices can be overwhelming. However, if you're considering hardwood floors, here's a compiled list of reasons why they stand out:

  1. Simplified, Expedited Cleaning with Fewer Chemicals: Contrary to popular belief, carpet or tile isn't necessarily easier to clean. Hardwood floors don't harbor mold between grout lines, trap bacteria in fibers, or accumulate dust. A straightforward mop with occasional non-aerosol spray suffices for maintenance. Avoiding oil-based cleaners is advisable, as they leave behind a film that can affect future refinishing efforts. Opting for a damp mop with water is the most efficient cleaning method, requiring less than half the time compared to vacuuming, scrubbing, or shampooing other surfaces.

  2. Enhanced Home Value: Genuine wood floors are a surefire way to elevate your home's resale value, boasting longevity that matches the lifespan of the property itself. Unlike carpet, which often requires replacement multiple times, hardwood floors typically need refinishing or repair far less frequently. Not only do they offer long-term cost savings, but they also add significant value to your home.

  3. Recyclability: The hardwood flooring industry prioritizes sustainability, effectively preserving existing resources and exemplifying the highest form of recycling.

  4. Reduced Allergens: With the majority of our time spent indoors, indoor air quality becomes paramount. Unlike other surfaces, wood floors do not harbor dust, fumes, dust mites, or mold, potentially alleviating allergy symptoms. Some researchers even suggest that dust mites, commonly found in carpet, could contribute to increased asthma occurrence. According to the American Lung Association, wood floors can actively improve air quality.

  5. Environmental Superiority: Compared to the manufacture of alternative building materials, wood manufacturing processes are notably cleaner. Steel, concrete, and brick production generate significantly more pollutants and carbon dioxide than wood. Moreover, wood results in less solid waste sent to landfills and boasts superior energy efficiency due to its cellular structure.

  6. Ease of Customization: Wood floors offer versatility in updating through staining, painting, and inlays without necessitating material replacement.

  7. Joint-Friendly Properties: The inherent flexibility of wood makes hardwood floors preferable for joints and posture. Medical professionals often recommend wood floors for spinal and joint health, as they offer greater comfort compared to stone or tile surfaces.

  8. Diversity in Appearance: Today's wood flooring market offers an unprecedented range of color options and grain patterns. Whether you prefer dark or light wood, domestic or exotic species, smooth or textured finishes, each choice contributes to the natural beauty of your home. With proper maintenance, finishes can be reapplied to conceal imperfections or enhance durability.

  9. Renewable Resource: North America boasts a remarkable abundance of forest cover, with more wood produced than anywhere else on the planet. This sustainable forestry ensures that more trees are grown than harvested, making wood a renewable resource.

  10. Additional Environmental Benefits of Hardwood Floors:

  • Wood floors contribute to better indoor air quality, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

  • With proper care, wood floors can last for hundreds of years, reducing the need for frequent replacements, as indicated by the National Association of Home Builders.

  • The annual net growth of hardwood trees exceeds the average annual removals, as reported by the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

  • Wood is a carbon-neutral product that produces oxygen during its growth and stores carbon during its service life, according to the University of Wisconsin Wood Products Program Solid Wood Flooring Life Cycle Analysis.

  • Wood flooring requires less water and energy for production compared to other flooring options, based on the University of Wisconsin Wood Products Program Solid Wood Flooring Life Cycle Analysis.

  • At the end of its service life, wood flooring can be burned as fuel or recycled, according to the University of Wisconsin Wood Products Program Solid Wood Flooring Life Cycle Analysis.

  • Most hardwood trees take 40-60 years to mature, ensuring a sustainable supply for future generations, as stated by the National Wood Flooring Association.

How many times can my floors be refinished?

When considering sanding and refinishing your floors, it's crucial to factor in the issue of dust. Ensure you inquire with your hardwood flooring refinisher about their use of a dustless sanding system. Our company employs a Dustless Sanding System, which effectively eliminates 98% of the dust typically generated during sanding and refinishing, all at no extra cost.

Before committing to a full refinishing project, explore alternative methods that may offer a more cost-effective and expedited route to rejuvenating your floors. Buffing and recoating can often achieve the desired shine in as little as one day, at a fraction of the cost of full sanding and refinishing. For further details, visit our Recoat and Reseal page.

For those requiring complete floor refinishing due to deep scratches or a desire to change floor color, several common questions arise:

  1. Duration: For a standard 500 sq ft square room in need of refinishing with three coats of water-based finish, the job typically spans four days. If opting for an oil-based finish, the process may be three days.

  2. Furniture Placement: With water-based finish, furniture can generally be moved back in 24-48 hours after the final coat, provided caution is taken to avoid dragging or pushing. For oil-based finishes, it's advisable to wait at least three days for proper drying.

  3. Rug Placement: It's imperative to refrain from placing area rugs and runners for a period of 7 days following the completion of refinishing. Adequate air flow is essential for the curing process of the finish, and premature placement of rugs may result in adhesion issues, potentially damaging the floors.
